He is Captain of the Southern ACT Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade, has served as Chair of the ACT Bush Fire Council (for thirteen years) and his contribution to bush fire management over many decades was recognised with the award of the Australian Fire Service Medal. As the local storekeeper he has been closely involved with the Tharwa community, leading the fight to retain the historic Tharwa Bridge (again) and to retain the historic and cultural values of the village. The people of the Tharwa district have not only lost their bridge (at least temporarily) but also their school, have endured more than six years of drought, suffered the 2003 bushfires and face the possibility of the flooding of the Naas valley for the Tennent Dam. These are indeed testing times for the rural community of Tharwa."

By examining the life and career of William Bradley, a pastoralist, politician, financier, capitalist and paternalist, a reconstruction of a life and career obscured from historical inquiry can be illuminated. The latest issue of the Canberra Historical Journal is now available.

The May 2010 issue of the Canberra Historical Journal includes the 2010 Canberra Day Oration delivered by Bishop Pat Power on 'Canberra and its Battlers' and the Vice Regal memories of Marlena Jeffery, wife of the previous Governor General. Lenore Coltheart continues her series on the story of the Albert Hall, covering the decades of the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

This edition of the Journal also includes Michael Dwyer's article on Charlotte Massey and the Gundaroo Bridge and Patricia Clarke reflects on the efforts of Eilean Giblin to help three of the Dunera 'enemy aliens' shipped to Australia during World War 2. Nick Swain examines the development of Barton, one of Canberra's oldest garden suburbs developed in the 1920s and there is a review of a book recently published to mark the 50th anniversary of the Academy of Science Shine Dome.

For news and information on upcoming events, for those who are interested in history, then look for the CDHS Newsletter.

In the June edition we celebrate the 2010 World Cup which coincides with the centenary of the first soccer games in the Canberra district in 1910. We remember the late Jo Grimnsley, teacher at Canberra High. There is also a look at the papers of Patience Wardle which are part of the CDHS collection. Nick Swain also looks at the extraordinary case of Dr. Robin Tillyard and his interest in psychic research.

Email the Society on admin@canberrahistory.org.au for more information on how to obtain copies of the Newsletter and Journal.
